Mary Elizabeth Dodson, long-time resident of Walnut Hills, passed away peacefully at her residence on January 4, 2011, at 2:30 a.m. She was 94. She had suffered with congestive heart failure, and then pneumonia and difficulty breathing further weakened her mortal body. Nevertheless, her determination to continue to live independently remained undaunted.
Elizabeth was born on April 8, 1916, in Danville, Virginia, the daughter of Isaac Newton Dodson and Mary Alice Diffendal, who predeceased her by many, many years. She had seven brothers and sisters who all died in their childhood. Elizabeth never married and had no children. In addition to her beloved cat Joey, her survivors are her many cousins, several of whom live in the Danville area, including her first cousin Ryland T. Dodson.
Elizabeth graduated from Randolph-Macon Womens College and received a Masters Degree from the College of William and Mary. Having also lived in Richmond and Norfolk, Elizabeth professional career took her to Cincinnati where she was employed as a social worker at Family Service of Greater Cincinnati. She retired in 1981. In recent years, she became more interested in her family history and expressed a concern about her Virginia relatives and a desire to know what had become of old Danville.
Funeral services will be conducted at Swicegood-Barker Funeral Home, 564 West Main Street, at 2 PM on Friday, January 14th. The family will receive friends one hour before the service. Burial will follow at Green Hill Cemetery. Pastor Carl Burger of Mt. Tabor Baptist Church will comfort the family from the Scriptures.
