Jane Wolf
In her younger years and late in life, Jane Belmeur Wolf had a passion for doing new things and seeing new places.
When she was in her forties, she took up yoga, long before it became popular, and taught its physical and mental disciplines to others. And in her early 80s, she sailed the seas on a cruise with her daughter, seeing the fjords of Norway.
"She was a passionate, vivacious person,'' said Wendy Jane Wolf of her mother, who passed away Monday at the age of 90, surrounded by friends and family at her Kennedy Heights home. "She loved life."
Mrs. Wolf was a native of St. Paul, Minn., but her family moved to Richmond, Va., when she was little. She married her former husband, John Howell Wolf, in 1946 and they moved to his home town of Cincinnati. By the time she married, she had attended Hollins University for two years and then went to the Katharine Gibbs Secretarial School in New York City. She worked at several firms over the years, most recently at the New Thought Unity Center in Walnut Hills.She was passionate about the arts - a frequent volunteer usher at Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra concerts at Music Hall and plays at the old Schubert Theater.
She took up yoga while in her 40s and ended up teaching it to others at the YMCA and other community centers.
Wendy Jane Wolf said her mother was teaching yoga at the downtown YMCA when she was 17; and she decided to take her mother's class.
"It was so embarrassing; here was my mother doing handstands and all sorts of athletic feats; and then, there was me, with my lithe and young body, who couldn't do a thing,'' Wendy Jane Wolf said. "I never went back."
Mrs. Wolf traveled much over the years. Her last major trip was about eight years ago with her daughter, sailing on a cruise ship through the fjords of Norway.
"One night, when we were on the North Sea, we ran into the most horrible storm,'' Wendy Jane Wolf said. "The captain said he had never seen a more powerful storm. There was a lot of damage on board. We were all scared to death. But not my mother - she slept through the whole thing and, when she woke up, she wondered what all the fracas was about."
In addition to her daughter, who lives in West Boothbay Harbor, Me., Mrs. Wolf is survived by her son, John Belmeur Wolf of Cincinnati, and two grand-daughters. Her ex-husband died in 2010.
A memorial gathering will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 2 at her gravesite at Forest Lawn Cemetery, 4000 Pilots Lane, Richmond, Va.

Jane Belmeur Wolf, age 90, died March 21 at home surrounded by her children, friends and attentive, caring nurses. During her long confinement, Jane was lovingly cared for by her devoted son who made it possible for her to remain at home in Kennedy Heights, looking out on the woods and watching sunset from her window.
Born May 28, 1920 in St. Paul, Minnesota to John and Clementine Belmeur, the family moved to Richmond, Virginia where Jane attended John Marshall High School. She spent two years at Hollins University then attended the Katharine Gibbs Secretarial School in New York City. She worked in several firms, most recently as the secretary at the New Thought Unity Center.
After marrying in 1946, Jane moved to Cincinnati with former husband, John Howell Wolf, where she pursued diverse interests. A supporter of the arts, she was a frequent volunteer usher at the Cincinnati Symphony and theater. In her forties, Jane studied yoga, and for several years taught at YMCAs and other local centers. She loved travel, most recently sailing the fjords of Norway. Jane remained a steadfast member of her local bridge club which provided fun and friendship over many decades.
Jane is survived by her son, John Belmeur Wolf, a resident of Cincinnati, daughter Wendy Jane Wolf and her partner, Mary B. Neal of West Boothbay Harbor, Maine, and their two daughters, Alice and Sarah. A memorial gathering will be held at 11 am on April 2 at the gravesite at Forest Lawn Cemetery, 4000 Pilots Lane, Richmond, VA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hospice of Cincinnati (www.HospiceOfCincinnati.org).
