Geneva Ward Fultz, 93, of Williamson, WV, passed away on Saturday, December 16, 2011, at the Good Shepherd Nursing Home in Phelps, KY.
Born August 10, 1918, at Nolan, WV, she was the daughter of the late Robert Ward and Victoria Sammons Ward.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her beloved husband to whom she was married for 66 years, the late Arville Murril Fultz. Fultz was a prominent and highly respected teacher and principal in the Mingo County Schools system. He taught at several schools during the course of his 50 years as an educator. He eventually became the principal at Main Building Grade School and retired from there in 1982.
She is also preceded in death by eight brothers and sisters.
Geneva was a graduate of Concord College, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in education. She was also a member of the Chattaroy Missionary Baptist Church.
She began her teaching career at Nolan Grade School. She also taught at Dingess, East Williamson and Williamson.
Geneva was a charismatic presence in the classroom. She was firm, yet gentle. She was understanding, but never a pushover. She was intellectually stimulating and her students had a clear understanding of what was expected of them. They were also aware of her genuine love and deep concern for their well-being. She was funny and could be quite animated at times. She knew just how to pitch her voice to get her point across. She often used gestures to remind the children that a particular behavior was disapproved of in her classroom or to show appreciation for a job well done.
Geneva was truly the quintessential teacher. She devoted her life to the children of Mingo County. Her last teaching assignment was at Nolan Grade, where 40 years earlier she had begun the journey that would inspire and influence the lives of so many young people.
Geneva was also a very dedicated and devoted wife and mother.
Her joy was made complete with the birth of her grandson, Heath.
She was a loving sister to her many brothers and sisters and she was deeply loved and cared for by each of them. She was also the proud aunt of several nieces and nephews.
Geneva is survived by her beloved daughter and only child, Bridget K. Call and her husband, Greg Call of Delbarton, WV; a grandson, Heath Call of Delbarton; her loving sister, Mary Lou Justice of Chattaroy; four nieces, Carole Steele, Leslie Fought, Jennifer Bivens-Kines and Victoria Bivens; and two nephews, Butch Bivens and Lenny Justice.
Friends may call from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm, on Tuesday, December 20, 2011, at Weaver Mortuary in West Williamson. The funeral service will begin immediately following the visitation at 1:00 pm. The Reverend W. L. Bostic will officiate.
Burial will follow the service at the Mountain View Memory Gardens at Maher, WV. Nephews, other family members and friends will serve as pallbearers.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Ashen Ali along with the staff of Good Shepherd Nursing Home for their professional and loving care over the past several years.
