Ella Mae Lee, 84 of Williamson, W.Va., passed away Thursday, December 31, 2015, at Community Hospital North in Indianapolis, Ind., following an illness.
Born April 10, 1931, in Williamson, she was one of nine children born to the late Lillian Emma Jean Shepherd of Williamson. She was married to the late Elroy B. Lee of Williamson and together they raised twelve children in all.
She was a member of the First Mount Zion Baptist Church in East Williamson where she sang in the choir, worked on the Kitchen Committee, and served wherever she was needed. She was a full time homemaker that loved taking care of children and loved her friends as well. She enjoyed visiting with patients at the nursing home and doing their hair, going to the senior center, and carpooling with her friends to visit various churches where she made so many friends.
In addition to her mother and husband, she was preceded in death by her son, Robert E. Shepherd of Columbus, Ohio, and one daughter, Carolyn L. Shepherd of Huntington, W.Va. Ella Mae was also preceded in death by four brothers: Robert Shepherd of Wilmington, Del., Clarence Shepherd of Boomer, W.Va., Willie Shepherd of Williamson, and Andrew Shepherd of Washington, DC, and four sisters: Lucille Booker of Fayetteville, W.Va., Maggie Pennington and Ida Shepherd of Columbus, and Rosie Shepherd of Williamson.
Those left to cherish her memory are four sons, Johnny Shepherd (wife Tessie) of Pikeville, Ky., Walter Shepherd of Rochester, N.Y., Jeffrey T. Lee of Laurel, Md., and Leonard Young (wife Brenda) of Williamson; six daughters: Lillian "Maggie" Newman and Martha Ann Lee Paige (husband Dennis) of Williamson, Teresa Young Diamond (husband Thomas) of Delbarton, W.Va., Denise Lee of Laurel, Md., Sabrina Lee Rush (husband Lamar) of Fishers, Ind., Cornelia Shepherd Scott of Indianapolis, Ind., and before Ella Mae had any of her own children she raised her loving niece, Mary L. Hunter of Columbus.
Ella Mae also had 33 grandchildren, 47 great-grandchildren, 14 great-great-grandchildren and a few more on the wayâ¦.as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
Homegoing services will be conducted at noon Saturday, January 9, at Hatfield Funeral Chapel with Rev. Gerald Dotson giving the eulogy and Rev. David Bell assisting. Burial will follow in Mt. View Memory Gardens at Maher, W.Va., with her grandsons serving as pallbearers.
Visitation will begin one hour prior to services Saturday at the funeral home.
