It is with a heavy heart that I write about the passing of a good friend and fellow Williamson High School graduate John Yost.
Yost, 66, of Prichard, passed away after a sudden illness Monday, February 22, 2016, at Cabell Huntington Hospital.
He attended Williamson High School where he played football and basketball in the mid 1960s and is a member of the WHS Athletic Hall of Fame. He then attended the W. Va. Institute of Technology on a football scholarship.
Yost had a stellar high school and college career as an offensive lineman and had a successful tryout with the Cincinnati Bengals, before an injury forced him to give up that dream.
Yost first returned to Williamson and worked at Persinger Supply Company. That is where I first got to know the Gentle Giant.
He received a degree in education and later taught and coached football for many years in Mingo and Wayne Counties. John was a retired teacher from Tug Valley High School and was currently a substitute teacher in Wayne County.
He also taught Physical Education for several years at Burch Elementary and also taught at the old Nolan Grade School.
He loved teaching and coaching and touched the lives of many. Big John, as he was affectionately known, coached football at Williamson, Matewan and Tug Valley High Schools.
John was loved by his players, students and fellow faculty members. He will be greatly missed.
Survivors include his wife, Karen Yost; son, Bradley Scott (Adria) Yost of Milton, W.Va.; daughter, Ashley Yost (Matthew) Williamson; grandchildren: Gage Alexander Williamson, Mason Reed Williamson, Jillian Faith Yost and Annmarie Elizabeth Yost; sister, Susan Yost (Ted) Jaeger of Gainesville, Ga., and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, February 26, at Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel at Barboursville by Rev. Pat Collier. Burial will be in Williamson Family Cemetery, Johns Creek Rd, Pikeville, Ky.

Coach Yost was my line coach at WHS in 1988 and 1989. He was a firm but fair man and I learned a great deal from him about hard work and dedication. May God bless his family and it was my pleasure to have known him.

I always looked up to John, in stature and admiration. I remember the wide body sitting in the balcony at 1st Pres.in Williamson. I was in awe. John was always humble and always so easy-going. Sandy and I will keep the whole family in our prayers.
