Dr. Andrew Hunter Henderson Jr., age 93, of Hinton, WV, died April 15, 2011 at his home.
He was born April 6, 1918 in Kelty, Scotland to the late Andrew H. Henderson, Sr. and Helen Watts Wells Henderson.
Andy was married to Vida Ball Henderson who lovingly cared for him at home during his
illness.
He arrived in the U. S. on December 29, 1925 aboard the SS Caledonia. He came through Ellis Island in New York along with his mother, his late older brother John Henderson, of Lexington, KY and his late twin brother Alex Henderson, of Cincinnati, OH. They joined Andy's father in McAndrews, KY where he had been employed as a coal miner for 2 years. After graduating from McVeigh High School, he attended Berea College and then graduated from Pharmacy School at the University of Cincinnati. He taught Pharmacology there until he was drafted into the army during World War II. He fought in the Pacific Theater in the Philippines, Pelelieu, and Okinawa and served in Korea after the war. Two weeks after returning from the war he began medical school at the University of Cincinnati. He graduated from medical school and completed his medical training in Cincinnati. He married the late Ivra Hill Henderson, the mother of 4 of his children and began his medical practice in Williamson, WV in 1950. One of Dr. Henderson's greatest accomplishments was securing benefits for coal miners who had incurred black lung disease. After visiting mines in Scotland and Pike Co, he testified in June of 1969 to the Select Subcommittee on Labor in the US House of Representatives. His testimony was some of the original medical research to support the passage of the original Black Lung Bill (HR 13950) sponsored by Rep. James Key (D-WV) and Rep. Carl Perkins (D-KY). During his medical practice (1950-1981), Dr. Henderson delivered nearly 4000 babies and made numerous house calls to his many patients. He was an excellent diagnostician and clinician. He was one of the first Board Certified Family Physicians. Dr. Henderson loved bringing the latest medical knowledge to his patients, and he loved nature and gardening. He spent his retirement living in the beautiful hills of Summers Co. WV. He delighted all who knew him in his later years with silly jokes, stories and anecdotes.
Dr. Henderson is survived by his wife and soul mate, Vida, his children MaryJane Ruggles (Terry), Dr. Andrew Henderson III ( Peggy), Dr. Artie Henderson (Laurie), Sally Henderson (Steve), Margaret Plymale (Albert) and his grandchildren Matthew and Meredith Ruggles, Eric (Heather), Pamela, Kurt and Drew Henderson, Kathryn Heim (Peter), Amy Henderson Riley (Brandon), Ian and Kelly Jackson, Chris, Mark and Mary Plymale, his great-grandson Thomas Henderson and also his beloved dog Lee. The family would like to thank Martha Tibbs Ball, his wife's sister, who helped care for him in his last months.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Williamson, WV. Services to celebrate Dr. Henderson's life will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, Williamson, WV at 1:00pm on Monday April 18th. The Reverend Vaughan Smith will officiate.
Burial will follow in Mountain View Cemetery, Huddy, Kentucky.
