13-year-old Esme Kenney, the baby of the family, was a seventh-grader who attended the School for Creative & Performing Arts. A gifted child, she was a vocal music major and an instrumental music major. She sang in the choir and played the cello in the junior high orchestra. She loved talking on the phone, playing cello, and doing homework. And she had her own blog, which she called The Esme Show.
Esme went out for a jog on Saturday afternoon at 3:45 p.m. Her mother was to join her on this jog... however, 20 minutes after Esme left the house, her mother was unable to find her. The police issued a missing person's report at 10:00 p.m. A search party was organized. Police didn't suspect foul play until they came across a man in the woods. That man was 40-year-old Anthony Kirkland. He immediately became a person of interest in Esme's disappearance. After an initial interview with Kirkland, officials immediately feared for Esme's safetyâ¦an Amber Alert was issued at 1:00 a.m.
At around 3:30 a.m. Sunday morning, a K9 unit discovered Esme's lifeless body. Details surrounding her death are not being released.
The family asks that people make a donation in Esme's name to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children.

Hundreds Mourn, Celebrate Life Of Esme Kenney
Reported by: Lynn Giroud
Photographed By: Jeremy Glover
Last Update: 3/11 8:54 am
"Tonight we hope to dry our tears on each other's shoulders. Tonight a city weeps."
Those were words spoken by student body vice president for the School for Creative and Performing Arts, Lucas Wozniak, Tuesday night.
Hundreds of SCPA students, friends and family filled the Aronoff Center to honor and celebrate the life of Esme Kenney.
The 13-year-old girl was described as bubbly and talented, who loved to sing and play the cello.
"Perhaps the greatest testament has appeared on the third floor at SCPA," said Wozniak.
"It began when Esme's friends taped a picture and bouquet of flowers on her locker," he said. "As the day went on, more and more cards appeared, letters and notes, until the small space of the locker could no longer contain them."
"Esme was life," said SCPA Artistic Director Dr. Isidore Rudnick. "She always had a smile and always knew when we needed a hug."
"Her joy was endless and she included everyone in her circle of light," said Rudnick. "We will keep your light alive Esme. We will miss you."
Students at SCPA say they are planning a march in Kenney's honor to raise money for the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

Overflow Crowd Turns Out For Esme Kenney Memorial
Permanent Memorial Possible To Honor Slain Student

CINCINNATI - An overflow crowd of mourners attended a memorial service Wednesday afternoon to honor 13-year-old Esme Kenney.
The crowd packed St. John's Unitarian Universalist Church off of Clifton Avenue, and so many people were in attendance that many more were turned away.
Esme Kenney's Friends: Darkness Has Not Extinguished Her

Several people could be seen waiting outside of the church, hoping to pay their respects after the memorial service was over.
"She was one of the best friends I've ever had," Esme's friend Erin Long said.
There was a message from the family, to the church community that has worked hard to support them during this unbelievably difficult time.
It spoke of Esme's death, as a battle between good and evil, between light and darkness.
"The darkness has not extinguished her. And as her parents told us - he will not win," close friend Lucas Wozniak said.
The circumstances of her death -- at this point -- still too much for many to talk about.
"Today is about Esme, and remembering her, and we'll let the justice system do what it needs to do," Esme's Sunday school teacher Diana Long said.
"She's an amazing girl, and everybody loved her, and she's going to be missed so much," Erin Long said.
There has been an outpouring of emotion since Kenney's was found strangled to death Saturday, hours after she failed to return home from a jog.
Convicted killer and sex offender Anthony Kirkland was arrested and charged with murder in her slaying.
Hundreds attended another memorial service Tuesday night that grew so large that the School for the Creative and Performing Arts -- where Kenney had been a student -- moved the event to the Aronoff Center.
The memorial was packed with students and staff from the school who put on a farewell performance for a beloved classmate.
"We will keep your daughter's spirit alive and we will cherish the legacy she has left with all of us," said SCPA Principal Dr. Jonathan Futch.
The choir and the orchestra -- Kenney's two great loves at the school -- had a prominent place on stage.
"I'm here, not to be sad, but I'm here to celebrate the life of this phenomenal young lady," SCPA alumni association member Robby Todd said.
Her sister, Frannie Kenney, was called on stage as Esme Kenney was inducted into the alumni association.
And while there were tears, there was hope for the future.
"In your light Esme, we will overcome evil," said teacher Laurie Wyant. "We love you, Esme, and your family at SCPA will honor you."
Plans were discussed for a permanent memorial at the school and a march to raise money for the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
