CASTLETON, VT – Caleb C. Kinney, 24, of Hemmsteed Road died Saturday (03-19-2016) as a result of a motor vehicle accident. Caleb was born at Baystate Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield, Mass. on April 3, 1991 to parents Barbara Emond and Charles Kinney. He attended Holy Trinity School in Greenfield for 6 years and then graduated from Frontier Regional High School in South Deerfield in 2009. He excelled as a member of the ski team, one of his many passions throughout his 4 years of Frontier. He lived in Sunderland for the first 17 years of his life, and he worked at the Smiarowski farm for Charlie and Karen for many years during that time. Caleb was a very hard worker, which made his family very proud. After high school graduation, Caleb attended and graduated from Castleton State University in May 2013. He graduated cum laude in Environmental Sciences, a field and career about which he was most passionate. During the summer of his Junior year of college, Caleb was employed by Positive Energy, a solar company based in Granville New York. After graduation, he was hired full time, and he excelled in this organization and loved all aspects of solar energy. He was responsible for design, financing, installation of commercial and residential solar systems, and marketing. He learned a lot from the owners, Joe Thomas and Josh Thomas and other supervisors at work and became an integral part of the team. At this time, he moved to Lake Bomoseen in Vermont. Caleb was an avid skier and had just returned from a back country ski trip to the Colorado high country. He loved the most challenging ski slopes he could find, and he was also passionate about rock climbing, ice climbing, motorcycling, and mountain biking through mountain terrains. Caleb served as a ski instructor for three years at Killington, a mountain he loved. He also assisted Steve Lulek who was an 11 year instructor for US military mountaineering school. They would take an annual trip instructing winter survival and mountaineering to students on top of Smugglers Notch and Tuckermans Ravine. For the previous 2 years, Caleb participated in the Killington Triathlon, with his best time of 2nd place. Caleb loved life and lived it to the fullest. One of his most endearing qualities was his laugh, which could affect everyone around him. He loved music, and he loved his friends and family. He leaves many high school friends from Frontier whom he saw regularly, as well as his new friends in Vermont. We cannot mention names as we may forget some of them, but Caleb loved you all and valued your friendship, just like you valued him. Along with his loving mother and father, his many friends, Caleb also leaves his loving uncle David and husband Drew Patrick of Henrico Virginia and Chuck's life partner, Pam Barber. His mother Barbara came from a large family who loved him dearly. His grandmother Rolande Emond, Uncle Roger Emond and his wife Nicki, Aunt Charlotte Emond, Denise Billow and her husband John, Jeanne Emond and many cousins, one favorite cousin Chelsey Shea and her husband Tommy who is stationed in Nebraska as a member of the U.S. Air Force. There was an extended family of caregivers when he was young, Nana who will never be forgotten and the Demers clan especially, JoJo. He was predeceased by his loving grandparents, Cerena and Charles Kinney Sr., both of Greenfield. He was also predeceased by his maternal grandfather Roger Emond. The family would like to thank the Castleton Police Department for their compassionate and caring professionalism during this tragedy. A memorial service will be held on Saturday (3-26-2016) at noon at Kostanski Funeral Home 220 Federal St. with the Rev. Sue Bowman, officiating. Calling hours will be held on Saturday from 10:30am-noon at the funeral home. There will be a reception at the Greenfield Moose Lodge 20 School St. in Greenfield at 1pm.
