Jack Donald Jakubek
10/6/1993~ 5/28/2016
Jack Donald Jakubek, 22, of Newburgh, NY, formally of Monroe, NY passed away on Saturday May 28th, 2016 on Cape Cod, Massachusetts, where he had lived and worked as a beach lifeguard for the past two summers, and vacationed with his family from the time that he was born.
Born in Teaneck, New Jersey on October 6, 1993 Jack grew up loving and embracing the outdoors. He was a natural born swimmer, fisherman, and nature enthusiast, and he viewed the world in a way that spoke to his understanding and appreciation for the beauty that the environment had to offer.
He was a 2012 graduate of Monroe Woodbury High School. During his time at MW, he was a six~year member and two~year team captain of the Varsity Swimming and Diving Team where he still holds school records. He went on to attend SUNY Cortland in the fall of 2012, where he majored in Outdoor Recreation with a concentration in Natural Resource Management and graduated with his Bachelors of Science Degree on May 14th, 2016. He was a four~year member, and two~year team captain of the SUNY Cortland Swimming and Diving Team, where he still holds Varsity school records, SUNYAC conference records and NCAA Division III National qualifying times.
During his final year at SUNY Cortland, Jack completed an internship at Lime Hollow Nature Center in Cortland, NY, where he was able to truly hone in on his passion for environmental conservation. He said that working at Lime Hollow opened his eyes to all of the possibilities for employment in the field, and he was able to identify that his passions would be best suited for a career as an environmental educator and activist. When he had the opportunity to help facilitate a day camp at the nature center, he saw how smart and inquisitive children were in regards to the outdoors and viewed that as an opportunity to help them embrace the idea of learning in an unorthodox way, outside of the classroom, and hands on. He wanted to show them that learning could be an exciting, inspiring, constructive and most importantly, a positive experience. He wanted to educate the world on how beautiful life could be if we just stepped outside, got our hands a little dirty, and embraced it.
Jacks positive outlook on life shined in everything that he did, and everything that he was. He understood that our lives here on earth represented a mere moment in time, and that the work we chose to pursue throughout our lives needed to be purposeful, meaningful and impactful. His biggest dream was to be able to share his love and passion for the environment with the world, and inspire others to find their own personal connection with nature, just as he did.
Jacks legacy will live on through all who loved him: his mother Jill Legg, father Mark Jakubek, brother Kramer, sister Anna, Step~father and husband of Jill, Scot Benn, maternal grandparents June and Don Legg of Brewster, MA, paternal grandparents Eileen and Anthony Jakubek of Elmwood Park, NJ, and countless Aunts, Uncles, cousins, and dear friends from all over the world.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Jacks name to Lime Hollow Nature Center, 338 McLean Rd. Cortland, NY 13045. It would have been his final wish to see Lime Hollow carry out future projects and facilitate nature camp scholarships for local youth.
Jacks life will be celebrated in private ceremonies in the near future.
Use your smile to change the world, dont let the world change your smile.
