Omar Mateen was the shooter in the Pulse Orlando Shooting (2016). He ran a religious non-profit called The Durand Jirga, Inc. with his dad Mir Seddique. He hails from Port St. Lucie, Florida and was born to Afghan parents. He was a registered Democrat according to state voter records, and also possessed a concealed carry license. Right before the shooting, he called 911 and pledged allegiance to ISIS.
He has no known previous criminal record, but was reportedly on the FBI radar in 2013 and 2014. The case was closed without action. In 2006 Omar changed his name from Omar Mir Seddique to Omar Mir Seddique Mateen. Mateens ex~wife Sitora YuSufi says he was physically abusive during the course of their brief marriage, and her parents had to rescue her from the relationship.
Pulse Orlando Shooting
On the morning of June 12, 2016 Mateen went into the Pulse Orlando (gay nightclub) and opened fire with an assault rifle and pistols. He then held himself and hostages in the bathroom for two hours. Police then raided the bathroom and shot him. He died at the scene. The shooting left 50+ dead and more that 50 injured, the largest US mass shooting in decades. ÃÂMateen worked as a security guard Fort Pierce and drove to the club in Orlando using a rental car.
Mateens father Mir Seddique stated that his son may have recently witnessed a gay couple kissing in public, as a possible motive for the attack. Omar was in Downtown Miami, Bayside when he encountered two gay men kissing and touching each other in front of his wife and son. He also had similar encounter when he and his son were in the men's bathroom.
Mateens father claims there is no connection to Islam in his sons actions. However, Mateens father gave a notable speech in 2011 advocating violence.
Following the incident Twitter accounts associated with ISIS tweeted #OrlandoIsBurning - the trademark phrase for ISIS claiming responsibility for attacks. ISIS also had threatened to target Florida 3 days before the attack.
This act of Terrorism and Mass Shooting occurred on June 12, 2016.
