Erna Mae Diamond
Retired Nolan Toll Bridge Attendant
Wife of the late Rev. John Diamond
Erna Mae Diamond of Concord, North Carolina, formerly of Ransom, Kentucky, passed away June 14, 2016. She was 86.
Born September 8, 1929, in Johns Creek, Kentucky, she was the daughter of the late Adron and Dixie Smith Varney.
God saw she was tired and a cure was not to be so He put His arms around her and whispered, Come with Me. We loved her dearly; we could not make her stay. A golden heart stopped beating; hard working hands to rest. God broke our hearts to prove to us that He only takes the best.
Erna retired from the Nolan Toll Bridge after many years of service. She was a member of Leckieville Freewill Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her beloved husband of 63 years, Rev. John Lee Diamond Jr.; a special son, Larry Ray Diamond; sons-in-law: Jackie Leon Plumb and Kenneth Finley; a brother, Estill Varney, and sisters, Elsie Hackney, Lilly Collins, Ruby Collins, and Goldie Bell.
Those that remain to cherish and embrace her memory include her son, Chester Douglas Diamond and wife Vicki of Fort Gay, West Virginia, daughters, Thelma Jo Plumb of Ransom, Kentucky, and Wanda Finley of Kannapolis, North Carolina, and Buddy Thompson of Dans Branch, West Virginia, whom she always thought of as as a son. Erna has six grandchildren, Jackie Leon Plumb Jr. of Blackberry, Kentucky, John Clarence Plumb of Merrimac, West Virginia, Robert Ray Smith of Concord, Tracia Lynn Smith of Kannapolis, Kimberly Renae Whitt of South Carolina, and Kevin Douglas Diamond of Las Vegas, Nev.; three great-grandchildren: Hope Dingus of Hardy, Ky., Tyler Plumb of Pond Creek, Ky., and Jonathan Smith of Concord; two great-great-grandchildren: Brycen Daniels of Hardy and Jonah Blake Dingus, also of Hardy, and one surviving sister, Kozetti Hensley of Oak Hill, Ohio.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday, June 17, 2016, at Hatfield Funeral Chapel with Bro. Haskell Runyon Jr. and Bro. Harrison Baisden officiating.
Interment will follow in Mountain View Memory Gardens at Maher, West Virginia, with grandsons and other family serving as pallbearers.
Visitation will begin after 6 p.m. Thursday evening at the funeral home with services at 7 p.m.
