GERTRUDE MARCUM
November 23, 1924 - June 16, 2016
Gertrude Isabelle Marcum, 91, of Williamson, was quietly called by God to her eternal home in Heaven as she peacefully slept. She passed away on June 16, 2016, while visiting her daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and David Chafin, at their home in Lake Village, Indiana.
Gertrude was born November 23, 1924, in Steeleville, MO, a daughter of the late James and Dora Mathews Mitchell.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by four brothers, James Lyle Mitchell, Jr., Carl, Frank and Jacob Mitchell and three sisters, Etta Mitchell, Betty Young and Elizabeth Everding.
Gertrude spent the earlier years of her life as a homemaker and rearing her sons and daughters. She was an exceptional mother who instilled love of family and strong values in each of her children. While she deeply planted the childrens roots at home, she also realized that their independent identities and individual hopes and dreams would one day bring each of her children to step out on their own. She lovingly released and watched as each child flew from the secure nest of home to make their way in the world. As she planted their roots she had also developed the strong wings that carry them still today. Gertrude was deeply proud of all of her children and their individual accomplishments. She was equally proud of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Gertrude was a phenomenal quilter and over the course of years she creatively crafted a quilt for each of her children, 20 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren. In addition to these quilts, she also gave numerous quilts to new mothers and as gifts for special occasions. These one~of~a~kind quilts will be cherished and passed down from generation to generation in the years to come.
As Gertrudes children grew and became more independent, she began to work outside the home. She was employed with Fort Pitt Shoes in downtown Williamson and soon went to work at the request of Harry Beinhorn, at B and L Furniture Company, where she was a top sales clerk for a number of years. After the closing of the furniture store she went on to work and retire from the Kids Place.
Gertrude was a beloved saint of God and attended the Chattaroy Church of God. When she was noÂt busy quilting, she enjoyed traveling and spending time with family.
Gertrude leaves a legacy of love that will endure for all time. She will be sorely missed and lovingly remembered always.
Gertrude is survived by four sons, Kenneth (Kim) Marcum, Huntington, WV, Floyd (Rita) Marcum of Medaryville, IN, David (Vicki) Marcum, Vinton, OH and John (Melissa) Marcum, Sidney, KY; four daughters, Patricia (David) Chafin, Lake Village, IN, Pam Dixon, Williamson, Edie McCoy, Clarksville, TN and Rebecca (Larry) Johnson, Rawl, WV; three sisters, Martha Callahan, Bonnie Spies and Monnie Wooldridge; 20 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and neighbors.
Visitation is from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm, Monday, June 20, 2016, at the Chattaroy Church of God.
Funeral services will be conducted at 12 noon on Tuesday, June 21, 2016, at the church. Pastor Michael Bostic will officiate.
Burial is in the Mountain View Memory Gardens at Huddy, KY. Gertrudes grandsons will serve as her pallbearers.
