Ruben Sherman VanHoose Sr., 88, of Nolan, went home to be with the Lord on July 12, 2016, at his residence.
Born December 5, 1927, at Nolan, he was a son of the late William VanHoose and Rebecca Qualls VanHoose.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Thelma Hicks VanHoose; a grandson, Roger Edward Green; three brothers, Thomas, William and Willie VanHoose and two sisters, Ora Lee Wellman and Emily Marcum.
R.S. is survived by four children: Rev. Ruben S. Jr. (Leigh Ona) VanHoose of Nolan, Wallace Sr. (Shelley) VanHoose of Rawl, Pamela (Roger) Green of Pikeville, Ky., and Koneta Parsley of Nolan; grandchildren: Rick (Sheri) VanHoose, Renee (Mike) Maynard, Rhonda (Rick) Hatfield, Marquetta VanHoose, Wallace VanHoose Jr., Brian (Ashley) Green, Bradley (Sibyl) Blankenship, Rachelle Starr (Chad) Collins and Kristen (David) Muncy; 13 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; three sisters: Eva (Ted) Cochrane of Ravenswood, Rose (Danny) Taylor of Centerville, Ohio, and Linda (Paul) Henson of Chattaroy; his longtime friend, Curtis Dingess of Goodman; a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family members and his church family.
R.S., as friends called him, was a retired employee of Norfolk Southern Railroad and was a member of the Brotherhood Maintenance of Way Union. A devote Christian, R.S. was a longtime member of the Nolan Freewill Baptist Church where he was ordained as a deacon in June 1953. He had also served as a Sunday school teacher for 30 years. R.S. was involved with the Boy Scouts of America and served as a scout master for many years.
Those who knew R.S. best, knew of his love and devotion for his Lord, his beloved family, his church family, his pride in his grandchildren, his pleasure in gardening and wood working. He enjoyed carving canes and has created several unique and beautiful canes over the years.
R.S. will long be remembered for his kind and pleasant nature, his sweet smile and gentle spirit. He will be sorely missed and lovingly thought of always.
Visitation is from 6-9 p.m. Thursday, July 14, at Weaver Mortuary at West Williamson.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday, July 15, at the mortuary. Reverends Ray Taylor, Earl White, Johnny Ray Taylor and Mike Smith will officiate.
Interment is in Mountain View Memory Gardens at Maher, W.Va.
Active pallbearers are Brian Green, Nicholas Hatfield, John Moore, David Muncy, Rick VanHoose and Wallace VanHoose Jr.
Honorary pallbearers are Chad Collins, Roger Green, Wallace Brock Robinson, John Starr and Greg VanHoose.
