SIDNEY, Ky. — Joseph Albert Joe Gugelchuk of Sidney, Ky., died Thurs., Sept. 26, 2013, at the Long Island State Veterans Home in Stony Brook, N.Y. He was 93.
Born June 1, 1920, in Hardy, Ky., Joe moved with his family to Toler, Ky., and then to Sidney, Ky., where he lived for 80 years.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1945 in World War II during which he earned the rank of Sergeant and was honored with the Purple Heart. Upon leaving the military he attended Coyne Electrical School in Chicago and returned to his home in Kentucky. He worked in the Williamson, W.Va., area as an electrician and subsequently founded his own business, known during most of the more than 50 years that he was the owner and operator as Williamson Builders Service and Supply. He was active in civic affairs, having served as president of the Williamson Lions Club and was involved in the 525 Flying Club for over 20 years.
Survivors include his daughter, Sally (Hubert) Keen of Farmingdale, N.Y.; son, Larry of Jacksonville, Fla.; two sisters, Anna (Rudolph) Stepp of Sidney and Helen (Gene) Williamson of Charleston; a brother, Frank (Mary Alice) of Rogersville, Tenn.
Preceding him in death was his wife, Dorothy Smith Gugelchuk; grandson, Christopher Keen; parents, Nicholas "Mike" and Mary Walkowicz Gugelchuk, and two brothers, John and Tony.
Calling hours will be held for Mr. Gugelchuk from 10 a.m.-noon Sat., Oct. 12, at R.E. Rogers Funeral Home at Belfry, Ky. Graveside services will follow at the Family Cemetery at Sidney with William Akers officiating. Belfry Chapter No. 141 DAV will conduct Military Graveside Services.
