Alpheus Paul Hatfield, 78, husband of Emma Easterling Hatfield, died Saturday evening, April 29 at the Hospice Care Center, Lexington. Born at Toler, in Pike County, Mr. Hatfield was a retired school teacher at the Mingo County Schools in Williamson, WV. He had served in the U. S. Army, graduated as Valedictorian from Pikeville College in 1957 with an A.B. in Math, obtained his Masters degree from Eastern Kentucky University, and further studied at the University of Kentucky and Marshall University. He was a member of Phi Delta Kappa fraternity. He and his wife have resided in Versailles since 1988. He was an active member of the Versailles United Methodist Church. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Paula Thacker and his son-in-law, Roger Thacker of Versailles, two grandsons, Nathan Thacker of Lexington, Aaron Thacker and his wife Kaelin of Jeffersonville, IN. an uncle, James (Ruby) Hatfield of Hardy, KY, a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Jaye and Junior Scalf of Sidney, KY and a dear friend, Mary Ann Harris of Versailles, along with numerous nieces and nephews. He considered Jillian, Anna Mae, Elizabeth, Joy, and Faith Brewer, the children of Cindy and Tony Brewer, as his granddaughters. Funeral services will be 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 2 at Blackburn & Ward Funeral Home. Interment will follow at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, May 3 at Mountain View Memory Gardens at Huddy in Pike County, KY. Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m., Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Methodist Home of Kentucky.
