KENTUCKY STATE TROOPER

A RESOLUTION adjourning the House of Representatives in loving memory and honor of Kentucky State Trooper Jonathan K. Leonard, who perished in the line of duty in service to his Commonwealth.

WHEREAS, 28-year old Kentucky State Trooper Jonathan K. Leonard was born August 4, 1978, in Pikeville, Kentucky, the son of Charles D. and Karen Cantrell Leonard, and departed this life on December 19, 2006, at the young age of 28 years, while responding to a nonemergency call on U.S. 119 in Pike County; and WHEREAS, Trooper Leonard was a 1996 graduate of Belfry High School; a 2001 graduate of Morehead State University with a Bachelor's Degree in Sociology and Criminology; and was a graduate of Cadet Class #81 of the Kentucky State Police Academy; and WHEREAS, Trooper Leonard was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Wallace Elmo and Dorine Leonard, and his maternal grandfather, Delmon Cantrell. In addition to his parents, he is survived by two brothers, Chad D. and Josh S. Leonard; his fiancee, Alison Davis; maternal grandmother, Beulah Mae Cantrell; a niece, Kayla Leonard; a nephew, Chase D. Leonard; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends; and

WHEREAS, Trooper Leonard is the 24th trooper killed in the line of duty in the 58-year history of the Kentucky State Police, and the first since 1988. The untimely passing of this outstanding young man reminds each of us of the risks assumed by the brave men and women who serve this Commonwealth, not just with the State Police, but in law enforcement at all levels. They risk their lives out of duty and, sadly, they sometimes give their lives to protect ours; NOW, THEREFORE,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky:

Section 1. The House of Representatives expresses its sincere condolences upon the tragic passing of Kentucky State Police Trooper Jonathan K. Leonard, and extends its deepest sympathy to his family, friends, colleagues, and community.

Section 2. When the House of Representatives adjourns this day, it does to in loving memory and honor of Trooper Jonathan K. Leonard, and extends the thanks of a grateful Commonwealth for his years of dedicated service.

Section 3. The Clerk of the House of Representatives shall deliver this Resolution to the Representative from Pike 93 for presentation to the Leonard family on behalf of the members.
