Southern Baptist Minister Leader. Elected president of the Southern Baptist Convention in 1979 and again in 1986-87, he was only the 3rd senior pastor of the 102-year-old congregation. His election turned out to a be a spiritual renaissance moment for the denomination. The 16.3 million member group shifted dramatically to the right politically and theologically back to its original commitment to the Bible. During his career, he conducted religious crusades in Taiwan, South Korea, Israel, Russia, Romania, in Central and South America. Presidents Carter and Reagan invited him twice to give sermons at the White House. In 2003, he was inducted into the Hall of Fame by the National Religious Broadcasters. He also was a Doctor of Theology and pastor of the 28,000 member Bellevue Baptist Church in Memphis Tennessee, for 32 years, retiring in March, 2005.
