David Hunter Lammlein, Ph.D.
David Hunter Lammlein, Ph.D., 33, passed away Sunday, the 28th of February, 2016 in Houston, Texas.
David was born on the 11th of April, 1982 in Houston, Texas to Leslie Peterson Lammlein and David Raymond Lammlein. During his childhood he attended West University Elementary School for Kindergarten through 5th grade and attended St. Johns School for 6th grade through 12th grade, graduating from high school in 2001.
David was highly active in sports throughout his youth and was popular with his peers in the West University community. He enjoyed playing street hockey in the 1990s with the local children and won many small tournaments competing alongside his best neighborhood friends. He played soccer competitively in local and citywide soccer leagues from early childhood through high school.
David was competitive in many sports, and at St. Johns School he competed on the schools teams in track & field, soccer, and cross country running. He was an exceptional longdistance runner and soccer player, passions that he continued to improve upon into his 30s.
David attended Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee from 2001 until 2011 and was a Member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. He graduated magna cum laude in 2005 with Bachelor of Science degrees in Mathematics and Mechanical Engineering.
David continued his studies at Vanderbilt as a graduate student on fellowships and working as a teaching assistant. He completed his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering in 2011. David distinguished himself as a leader in the new field of frictionstir welding and coauthored several dozen peerreviewed technical papers published in engineering journals and scholarly publications, in addition to patents in the field of frictionstir welding.
Since graduation, David worked for the US Navy as a Materials Engineer performing research in the field of frictionstir welding at the Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock Division (NAVSEA) in the Welding, Processing, and NDE Branch. David loved solving puzzles and the intellectual challenges of his work.
David was extremely close to both of his parents and to his only brother, Jack. David and his brother traveled abroad and throughout the United States together, and they loved to snow ski, snowboard, water ski, hike, and run. In 2007 they traveled to Europe and visited six countries, in 2009 they traveled to Guatemala together and hiked to the top of an active volcano, in 2010 they ran a marathon together in New Orleans, and in 2011 they traveled to Alaska to hike mountains and snow ski together. David had seemingly boundless energy and was always physically active in sports and the outdoors.
David was very close to young Presley Carpenter, the daughter of his girlfriend Fonda Carpenter whom he dated from 2008 through 2011. He was a father figure to Presley and cared deeply for her throughout the rest of his life.
To know David was to love him, as is evident by his countless loving family and friends. David and his longtime girlfriend, Shannon Stonemetz, met in April 2, 2012 through a mutual friend and started dating shortly thereafter and through the time of his death. Together they were a perfect match, enjoying everything from traveling to being outdoors to date nights at their apartment.
David had a way of threading the needle between intellectual brilliance and down to earth humor, capping off with a smile that could light up any room. Davids energetic spirit took him and Shannon on many adventures in which they traveled the world together from Argentina, to Indonesia, and to Mexico with friends where they hiked glaciers and saw penguins and komodo dragons. Anyone who knew Shannon and David knew that their love was a love of a lifetime.
In his final months while he was suffering from a long illness due to autoimmune connective tissue disorder, his mother devoted herself to caring for his every need to ensure that his suffering was as minimal as possible. David loved his mother very much and was greatly appreciative of everything that she did for him, especially in his final days.
David is survived by his father David Raymond Lammlein, Houston; his mother Leslie Peterson Lammlein, Houston; his brother Jack Lammlein, Houston; sisterinlaw Jessica Lammlein, Houston; uncle Chuck & aunt Dee Steen, Phoenix, Arizona; uncle Curtis Stroud Peterson & aunt Lea Stublarec, Menlo Park, California, their children Hilary Peterson Yamtich & Whitney Marjorie Peterson, their granddaughter Lea Lynn Tousant; aunt Lisa Steen & uncle Casey Padgett, Washington, D.C.; uncle Jon & aunt Meredith Steen, Clifton, Virginia, their children Tristan, Leyna, & Graydon; uncle Doug & aunt Supannee Madson, Austin, Texas, their children; aunt Sharon Nienhaus, Santa Clara, California, & her children; aunt Lynn Carmody, Ballwin, Missouri, & her son; and aunt Joyce Lammlein, Phoenix Maryland, & her daughter.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from five oclock until eight oclock in the evening on Friday, the 4th of March, in the library and grand foyer of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston.
A funeral service is to be conducted at halfpast ten oclock in the morning on Saturday, the 5th of March, in the Jasek Chapel of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons.
