MAE O BRYAN STALLARD
Williamson, Mingo County, West Virginia
Educator -
Mae OBryan Stallard, affectionately known as Miss Boo, 86, lifelong resident of the Williamson area, went to her Eternal Rest Friday, May 27, 2016. Mae was the wife of the late Howard Stallard for 52 years.

Born July 10, 1929, at Huddy, Ky., she was the oldest of twelve children of the late Brown and Grace Smith OBryan. Surviving siblings are Joe OBryan and wife Shirley, of Troy, Mich., Johnny OBryan of Warren, Mich., Linda OBryan of Belfry, Ky., Margaret Stanley of Canada, Ky., Barbara Abshire of Stone, Ky., Janet Runyon, also of Warren, Mich., Shirl Turner of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Sue Scott of South Williamson, Ky.; and a sister-in-law, Dean OBrien of Belfry, Ky. Siblings and their spouses that preceded her in death include: Bobby OBryan, Frank OBrien, Mary Lou Runyon and husband Bob, Olva Stanley, Jim Runyon, Johnny Abshire, Mark Turner, and Harold Scott. She is also survived and preceded in death by countless members of the OBryan and Stallard families who meant the world to her.

Mae and Howard are survived by two children, Gregory Howard Stallard and the love of his life, Elaine Freeman, of Williamson, and Nancy Stallard Richards and husband John, of Lynchburg, Va.; four granddaughters: Misty Brewer of Berea, Ky., and Jessica OBryan Richards, Maegan Elizabeth Richards and Rebecca Sylling Richards, all of Lynchburg; and a great-granddaughter, Taylor Edwards of Berea.

Mae graduated from Belfry High School and Marshall University where she earned a Bachelors in Elementary Education and Social Studies and a Masters in Elementary Education, as well as completing over 40 additional hours towards her Doctorate. She taught full time in Williamson for 23 years, but, as Howard often said, ((the only thing that retired was her paycheck(( as she continued to substitute and serve as advisor for several clubs and events for many years. Mae helped establish school social studies fairs throughout West Virginia. She received numerous awards and her passion for her students was obvious. When she received Mingo Countys 1995 Teacher of the Year Award she said, ((If all I strive to teach is found within the pages of the textbook, I have failed my students.(( She believed she was responsible for the academic, social, physical and emotional growth of each of her students.

She believed in the abilities of all people and was recognized for this in her appointment to the Governors Advisory Board to the Commission on Mental Retardation (1965-70) which led to the passage of a bill requiring mandatory education for all handicapped children. She was also a West Virginia delegate to the Presidents Committee for Employment of the Handicapped.

Mae was always thinking of others and doing something to make the world around her a better place. To say that she ((had a heart that beat strongly for her community(( is a vast understatement. Mae embodied what it means to be a civic leader. She was the Williamson High School Tri-Hi-Y and Hi-Y Coed advisor for 51 years, a Sunday school teacher at First Baptist Church for more than 40 years, and President of A.I.M. (Action in Mingo) that sponsored the King Coal Festival for almost 40 years. Mae wrote a daily devotional for the Williamson Daily News and recorded a weekly devotional for WXCC radio for over 30 years. She had poems published in Treasured Poems of America (summer 1997) and American Poetry Anthology (1971).

If there was an event, parade or wedding to be directed, Mae had a hand in it. If there was a teaching or civic award to be earned, Mae has received it. When given a key to the city on ((Mae Stallard Day(( in 1998, she had a hard time with the event being named for her as she stated she was never alone on any project that she conducted and credit was to be given to all that made it happen.

Maes love of the Lord, her family, friends, students, church and community is evident in her scrapbooking. She has 15 scrapbooks full of news clippings, letters, poems, photos, wedding programs and every handwritten note ever sent to her. This doesnt count the boxes of additional items that never made it into a book. For as much as she impacted the lives of everyone around her, they made just as significant an impact on her.

When Mae actually took time for herself and Howard, they embraced their passion for travel, together visiting all 50 states and nearly as many countries. Her motto was, ((If the Lords willing, Im able.(( She enjoyed life more than anything. Her family, newspaper devotions, poems and the countless lives she touched are her legacy. Her spirit will live on in them and never die.

The family will receive friends from 6-9 p.m. Saturday, June 4, at Weaver Mortuary. Maes Celebration of Life will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 5, at First Baptist Church of Williamson with Pastor Jarrod Belcher officiating. Interment will follow in Mountain View Memory Gardens at Huddy, Ky. Online condolences may be expressed at www.weavermortuaryinc.com.
