Steve Adkins, son, father, husband, grandfather, great-grandfather and resident of Delbarton, passed away Thurs., Feb. 12, 2015, after a short illness. He was born Aug. 11, 1927, to the late Savage and Pearl Adkins and was a lifetime resident of Delbarton, where he and his wife lived, raised their children and owned a clothing store.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Lorraine Osborne; brother Cloyd, and loyal furry friend Ginger.

Surviving family members are his wife of 65 years Reba Marcum Adkins; children, Stephen Douglas (Sandy) of Huntington, W.Va., and Amy (Greg Benally) of Sausalito, Calif.

He was the proud grandfather of Alison of Charlotte, N.C., and Stephen Derek (Barrie) of Huntington, W.Va., and great-grandfather of Aubrey Anne Adkins. He was also survived by special furry friend Scooter. His surviving siblings are Lola Faye (Bill) Coleman of Markesan, Wis., Edith (Rigney) of Clover, S.C., Rush (Ethel) of Rock Hill, S.C., and a host of nephews and nieces.

During World War II, he left high school during his senior year to join the Navy. He served Mingo County residents for well over four decades as a public servant: as the youngest Sheriff, Chairman of the Democrat Party, County Commissioner and Director of Emergency Services. In addition to his political career, he worked for Price Motor Company, cheered on his favorite sports teams from the Burch Bulldogs, Dallas Cowboys and Marshall University.

The family would like to extend their appreciation to our many extended family members, Terri Fields and staff at the ARH Skilled Nursing facility for the compassionate care they demonstrated during his the last few weeks.

Graveside services will be observed at noon Sat., Feb. 14, at Adkins Cemetery near Steves house in Delbarton with Rev. Lewis Hall officiating. Visitation will be from 6-9 p.m. Friday evening at the Chafin Funeral Home Chapel.
