Bernice Woods Lomax was born January 1, 1923, in Atlanta, Georgia, as the whistles blew to signal the start of the New Year. She was the second oldest of five children born to Rev. John H. Woods and Martha (nee Booker) Woods.

Bernice graduated from Sumner High School in Martinsburg, West Virginia, and completed her education Magna Cum Laude at West Virginia State College and was a Delta Dear with Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. Her first teaching position was with the West Virginia University Department of Agricultural Extension providing home demonstrations. She was hired to teach Science at Liberty High School in Mingo County and later matriculating to Williamson High School. Her teaching career spanned over 40 years with the last 15 years teaching what she loved most, Home Economics. She enjoyed preparing her students to care for and maintain a household. Up until her passing her former students continued to reach out to her and often spoke fondly of the impact she made in their lives.

She met and married James Lomax and to this union two children were born, Cheryl Marniece and Melaine Kay. She was devoted to caring for her aged parents until their demise and taking care of her daughter Melaine. She was the consummate homemaker and seamstress; she enjoyed cooking and spending time with family. Her effervescent smile and calm demeanor was her trademark. She was admired by many and respected by all. Always gracious and complimentary, she will be greatly missed.

Raised by a Methodist minister, she and her siblings spent many hours in church, Bible Study, Sunday School and revivals. After moving to Williamson she joined St. James A.M.E Church and later transferred her membership to Logan Street First Baptist Church where she could often be found playing the piano during the worship services. In 2006 she relocated to Cincinnati, Ohio, to be closer to her daughter.

On Monday, October 3, 2016, with her loving daughter Melaine and devoted friend Shirley Colegrove by her side, Bernice made her transition to be with God. She was preceded in death by her daughter Cheryl, parents and siblings, Booker, Ray, Paul and Iris. She leaves to cherish her memory, daughter Melaine K. Lomax of Cincinnati, Ohio; grandson Elijah Votaw; brother-in-law Alvin Ramsey of Detroit, Michigan, and special friend Savolia Joyce of Dunbar, West Virginia. She was the beloved Aunt Sis to a host of nieces and nephews.

Visitation is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, October 10, 2016, at Weaver Mortuary in West Williamson, West Virginia. The funeral service will immediately follow visitation at 1 p.m. with Reverend Thomas Schuler, Reverend Shawn Woods and Reverend David Meredith officiating.

Entombment is in Mountain View Memory Gardens at Maher, Mingo County, West Virginia. Family members and friends will serve as pallbearers.
