Nancy Carol Luther Coleman, age 73, of Falls Branch (near Chattaroy), West Virginia, passed away on Saturday, November 26, 2016, along with her beloved dog, Cosmo, from injuries sustained in a tragic house fire.
Born July 14, 1943, in Kenova, West Virginia, she was the youngest daughter of the late Arch Hatten Luther and Clarissa Faye Brumfield Luther.
Nancy was a graduate of Chattaroy High School class of 1961. She was an excellent student and athlete. She particularly excelled in softball and played on various leagues. During her junior year she attended Girl's State. Following graduation, she completed her post secondary studies by becoming a medical laboratory technician and attained the title of MLT(ASCP). When she took her state board exam for licensure, she scored so high on the first try that she never had to take the exam again for licensure in any state except for Florida and California. She attained the position of head of the Hematology Department at the Appalachian Regional Hospital where her career spanned 30 years.
She was married to the late James Edward Coleman, and to this union was born her only child, Kelli. Kelli was her mother's pride and joy. Nancy's life centered around seeing that Kelli was educated, self-sufficient, and she always had expectations for her child to be prepared for life. Nancy was a caring, compassionate person and would listen to people.
She had a special way of expressing herself, as she possessed a spry and lively personality. You never had to "guess" where you stood with Nancy or what her opinion was because she was very plain spoken.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three siblings, John Wesley Luther, June Evelyn Hillard, and Mary Lee Thomas.
She leaves to cherish her memory, her beloved daughter, Kelli L. Coleman, a teacher in Williamson, West Virginia, and siblings, Garrett Luther of Beckley, West Virginia, Archie Lloyd Luther of Aiken, South Carolina, Richard Marvin Luther of Columbus, Ohio, and David Keith Luther of Proctorville, OH, a special niece and her husband, Denise and Eugene Preece of Turkey Creek, Kentucky, and her caregivers, Brenda Smith, Renee Workman, and Tara Sexton.
Nancy's baby, her dog Cosmo, tragically perished in the fire with her. Cosmo was born March 21, 2014 and was a Show Pug. He was an AKC Champion and finished with a group placement. Recently at the Nolan Church of God, Cosmo won the Most Unusual Name and Best Costume awards. He brough such joy and happiness to Nancy and the family.
A Memorial Service to Celebrate Nancy's Life will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, December 17, 2016, at the First Presbyterian Church of Williamson, West Virginia with Rev. Tom Schuler officiating. Rev. William Long Hudson, Dr. Johnny Branch, and Pastor Eugene Preece assisting with special comments.
Interment of Nancy's and Cosmo's cremated remains will take place at a later date in the Cyrus Cemetery in Cyrus, WV.
Friends may call from 12 noon until time of service on Saturday, December 17, 2016, at First Presbyterian Church of Williamson, West Virginia.
