Joseph O. Porter Jr., MD, died October 21, 1982 in Indian Hill, Ohio when the helicopter he was piloting experienced a tail rotor failure. The Robinson R22 Helicopter experienced Mast Bumping and severed the tail assembly from the aircraft.

Dr. Porter was a former U S Airforce Pilot. He recently started flying lessons with Cardinal Air Training at Lunken Airport with Pat Fairbanks, CFI. This was his second solo flight when the crash occurred. Dr. Porter was flying above his sons football game when the crash occurred. His son Gary, an Indian Hill High School football player, witnessed the crash. Several witnesses said they saw the tail break free of the helicopter and sent the helicopter spinning out of control until it fell onto the school parking lot from 300-500 feet above the field.

Dr. Porter was Chief of surgery at Mercy South. He was on staff with almost every hospital in Hamilton County, Ohio.

Services at 1pm on October 25, 1982 at Thomas Justin Funeral Home on Montgomery Road. Interment Gate of Heaven Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife Kathleen; sons, Gary and Robert, and daughter, Beth.
