Richard E. Dunne MD

Richard Edwin Dunne was born on August 26, 1894 in Derby, Connecticut to John and Margaret (nee Shortell) Dunne. Dr. Dunne died suddenly on May 29, 1946, at Hartford.

He grew up in Derby and attended public schools. He later attended Holy Cross and matriculated to Catholic University in Washington, DC and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 1915. He earned his MD from Harvard Medical College in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1919.

He interned at Boston City Hospital and St. Margaret’s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. He established a private practice in Hartford, Connecticut. He specialized in surgery and his practice grew as his developed an excellent reputation. He went on to become chairman of the surgical staff at St. Francis Hospital. He was active in the Hartford Medical Society and served on several committees with that group. He was the president-elect of the Hartford County Medical Association. He was a diplomate of the American Board of Surgery and belonged to the New England Surgical Society and was a member of the American Medical Association.

He was a member of the University Club, in the Hartford Golf Club, and in the Wampanoag Country Club. He was also a loyal member of the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks, and, a Roman Catholic in religion, belonged as well to the national fraternal order of men of that faith, the Knights of Columbus. On June 21, 1923, Dr. Dunne was married at Hartford, Connecticut, to Dorothy Burns.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy (nee Burns) Dunne. His children, Richard E. Dunne, Jr., Dominick J.
