Ray Calvin Curry, 88, of Chattaroy, WV, passed away peacefully in his home with his loving wife by his side on October 15, 2023. Born May 8, 1935, at Webb, Wayne County, WV, Ray was the son of the late Landon and Lora Cassidy Curry.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Roy Curry, Clyde Curry, Thomas Curry, Bill Curry, and his wife Seigel, Charles Curry and his wife Shirley, Paul Curry, and his one sister Goldie Perry and her husband Thurman.

Ray was a 1952 graduate of Chattaroy High School. He began his career teaching in a one-room schoolhouse when he was 17 years old. He later worked as an administrator for Williamson Memorial Hospital and retired as a supervisor from the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Services. His hobbies included golfing, bowling, playing basketball, dancing with his wife Lucinda, playing checkers, and coaching. He was a staple in the community, known by all for many good things, but especially for coaching little league baseball and midget league basketball, as well as a Babe Ruth team for the older youth. He shared a love for antique cars with his brothers and sons, especially his prized 1962 Chevy Impala. In his younger days he could be found enjoying time at Currys Lunch owned by his parents, in Nolan WV. He was also known to be a big-time prankster like his late father Dadi Curry. He proudly adorned the nickname Papaw Grump given to him by his many grandchildren, who were his pride and joy. He was a long-time member of the Borderland Baptist Church where he enjoyed serving the Lord and fellowshipping with his church family. He will be remembered as a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He brought love, joy, and laughter to all who knew him and will be greatly missed.
